Event Description
Join the Center for Children’s Literature at Bank Street College of Education on Wednesday, June 9th at 7:00PM EST via Zoom to listen to Warren Binford discuss her findings at the border and how it led to the creation of Hear My Voice/Escucha mi voz through Project Amplify. Illustrator Raúl Gonzalez III will join the presentation and speak about the book’s illustrations.

About the Book
Shocked by the conditions in which young detainees in 2019 were living in U.S. detention camps, a child rights expert, Warren Binford, and a member of Human Rights Watch, Michael Garcia Bochenek, shared what they had seen with an Associated Press reporter. Denounced as “fake news” by the then presidential administration, Warren and Michael took to social media and called for artists, reporters and faith leaders to help the children tell their stories. One of the results is the picture book Hear My Voice/Escucha mi Voz featuring sworn testimonies given by children while held in border facilities. Seventeen illustrators created powerful artwork to help bring the children’s accounts to life.

We’re gearing up for JCLC 2022! The 4th National Joint Conference of Librarians of Color will be held October 5-9, 2022, at the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida. The conference is organized by JCLC, Inc., a nonprofit organization that advocates for and addresses the common needs of the five ethnic affiliate associations of the American Library Association (ALA): the American Indian Library Association (AILA), the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), and REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. We hope you’ll make plans to join us!

To make this event as successful as previous years, we’re kicking off our fundraising efforts with the first of two gaming and social events on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at 4-5:30 p.m. PST. During this event, the JCLC 2022 Steering Committee will gather with us to unveil the conference theme. There will be online games like Pictionary, Taboo, and Spyfall, and a virtual space for networking and socializing. The second event will be on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 1-2:30 p.m. PST.

Purchase your tickets on Eventbrite for the April 24 event. We are asking for a $50 donation; however, the minimum donation is $1. There are seats for only 300 participants per session, so get your tickets today!

Can’t make the social events? There are other ways to support us, including Amazon Smile or a direct donation via Paypal. We thank you for your support of JCLC 2022.

Game on!
